Central Wesleyan College from 1969 to 1974

In 1906, the original campus where Southern Wesleyan University is now located was briefly called Wesleyan Methodist Bible Institute. For several decades afterward known as Wesleyan Methodist College, the school became Central Wesleyan College from 1959 until 1994, when the college became the university it is today.

During the time I attended, from 1969 to 1974, the college underwent quite a few changes.  In my first year, 1969, there was no collegiate sports team, and the intramural sports - football, basketball, softball, soccer - were very popular and well-attended by the student body.  However, in 1970-71 school year, the college began it's first-ever intercollegiate sport, basketball, and the era of participation in college athletics for Central Wesleyan College was born.  The newly-built Tysinger Gymnasium on the campus was always packed for home games, and the team did surprisingly well, finishing with a 6-4 record.
